A truck, football and the Acre of Diamonds

It will come as no surprise that me deciding to study dentistry was not a “burning” childhood desire. Especially not for a girl who spent most of her afternoons playing football with the boys from the neighborhood and dreaming about driving a truck across Europe.
The old parable of the Acre of Diamonds tells the story of a farmer who sells his land to search the world for diamonds — only for the new owner to discover the largest diamond mine on the very ground he left behind. We spend years looking at distant fields, convinced that opportunity lives anywhere but here.
My truck-driving dream was never really about trucks. It was about freedom, movement and seeing what is over the horizon. Dentistry, consulting and eventually leadership work gave me exactly that — just not in the packaging I expected as a child.
The lesson I keep re-learning: before you sell your acre, dig it. The skills you dismiss as ordinary, the market you consider boring, the team you think has plateaued — that is usually where the diamonds are.
